Mobile Dysphagia Consultants

What does the patient eat for the test?

Our standard food trials consist of: pudding, rice krispies cereal, peach fruit cup, white bread, and unsalted pretzel. We have apple sauce available if lactose intolerance is of concern. We have gluten free cookie available if gluten is of concern. If there are additional dietary restrictions, we recommend the patient or caregivers provide food that is safe for patient to consume.

Are there side effects to consuming barium?

Barium can be constipating when consumed in large volumes. The volume of barium consumed during MBSS/esophageal assessment does not typically cause constipation; however, we recommend increased hydration following the exam to reduce this risk.

Can a patient use an electric wheelchair, Geri chair, or Broda chair during study?

YES. However, the study will be limited to oral and pharyngeal assessment only. The esophagus cannot be evaluated.

Can a patient use a tilt in space or specialized wheelchair?

YES. However, metal in back of chair may obstruct a full esophageal evaluation. A standard wheelchair is ideal if it is a safe option for the patient.

My patient is on fluid restriction - does this affect study?

Most often no - patients consume less than 50cc of liquid during the exam. Our staff will monitor how much liquid is consumed and update nursing.

Can a patient wear a cervical spine collar during study?

YES. Cervical collars are not radiopaque and do not interfere with the study.

Is it ok if a patient has a pacemaker, hearing aids, or deep brain stimulator?

YES, these devices will not interfere with the study and the X-ray will not damage these devices.

Patient is allergic to IV contrast/contrast media- is MBSS ok?

YES. barium is not iodinated and is used as an alternative contrast for those allergic to IV contrast/contrast media.

How much radiation does the patient receive?

See the attached handout for further information regarding radiation safety and MBSS.

Can my patient use adaptive feeding equipment during the consultation?

YES. We welcome the use of any preferred or necessary adaptive equipment such as lidded cup, nosey cup, maroon spoon, Provale cup etc. Please provide the equipment during consultation.

Can my patient be seen if they are on precautions?

We can see patients on contact and droplet precautions (please note on the scheduling/order form) If we are seeing multiple patients at your facility, we ask that the patient on precautions be seen LAST. We CANNOT see patients on isolation precautions (e.g active COVID, active flu).
